Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

Bexley Borough Neurodevelopmental Team

10 Pas – 40 hours per week - Fixed term for 6-12 Months

£82,096 to £110,683 per annum + £2,162 LW

Following new investment, an exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a competent and enthusiastic Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to work within the Bexley CAMHS LDND team.

We seek to appoint an able and enthusiastic Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to provide a specialist service for children and young people in Bexley.  You will work with children and adolescents up to 18 years and their families/carers, with significant and enduring mental health difficulties, and in the first instance with those with learning disabilities, ASD and or ADHD.

You will manage a complex caseload providing assessment and intervention within the multi-disciplinary Neurodevelopmental/Learning Disabilities (NDLD) teams, working with children with a range of mental health conditions including children with neurodevelopmental disorders (ASD, ADHD) and co-morbid mental health difficulties.

Bexley CAMHS provides specialist mental health consultation, assessment and treatment to children and young people aged 0-18 years with severe and enduring emotional, behavioural and mental health difficulties (and their families/carers).  The service provides evidence-based interventions informed by national and local policy via multi-disciplinary teams and treatment pathways, and is aligned to the core principles of the Children & Young People’s IAPT framework (CYP-IAPT).

The NDLD teams include clinicians from the disciplines of psychiatry, clinical psychology, child psychotherapy, mental health nursing, family therapy, social work and occupational therapy. You will be required to work in close partnership with partner agencies working with young people in Bromley.  You will also provide specialist advice and support to professional colleagues both internal and external to the Trust.

The team is responsible for a high throughput of cases and there are clear protocols for transition between the CAMHS teams for children identified with Neurodevelopmental difficulties or escalating needs around self-harm or other significant mental health difficulties.  You will be initially undertaking LDND work for a minimum of 6 months, after which a generic component will be introduced into the job following a job planning meeting.  The role is likely to be advertised as substantive towards the end of the fixed term contract.

The post holder will have membership of the Royal College of Psychiatry/equivalent; accredited higher training/equivalent in Children and Young People’s mental health; and excellent therapeutic skills and be able to be responsive and flexible in working with young people.

Bexley CAMHS is a friendly, busy and thriving CYP IAPT service, regarded as an accessible and effective service.  Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, learning disabilities and community services to the London Boroughs of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich.  The Trust and CAMHS have recently been rated as good by the CQC and has a culture of supporting staff, whilst providing excellent services within a robust clinical governance framework.  The post holder is ultimately responsible to the Chief Executive of the Trust, professional accountability is to the Medical Director, Dr Ify Okocha and leave/appraisal and job planning would be with the Clinical Director.  The psychiatry profession is well regarded within the Trust as a whole. There are excellent CPD opportunities within the three monthly MAC meeting and monthly CAMHS psychiatry meetings and SPA time is available within the timetable.
