Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist – Bexley Borough Neurodevelopmental & Generic Team

Following new investment, an exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint an experienced and enthusiastic full time Child and Adolescent consultant Psychiatrist to work within the Bexley Learning Disabilities & Neurodevelopmental Disorders (LDND), and Generic teams. The new post will be a mixed between both, with 0.8 sessions within the LDND pathway and 0.2 sessions within the Generic Pathway.

The post holder will have membership of the Royal College of Psychiatry/equivalent; accredited higher training/equivalent in Children and Young People’s mental health; and excellent therapeutic skills and be able to be responsive and flexible in working with young people.

You will work to provide a specialist service for children and young people up to 18 years with significant and enduring mental health difficulties and with learning disabilities, neurodevelopmental disorder (ASD & ADHD) along with their families and carers within the Borough of Bexley. You will manage a complex caseload providing clinical leadership, assessment and intervention along with the multi-disciplinary teams within both the LDND & Generic teams. The teams include psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, child psychotherapists, social workers, family therapists, occupational therapists, nurses and support workers. 

The Learning Disability/Neurodevelopmental Team of Bexley CAMHS works with children and young people with both learning disabilities and/or neuro developmental disorders and mental health difficulties, as well as with their families.  The post holder will work within the LDND multi-disciplinary team in Specialist CAMHS based at Acorns purpose-built child development centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup alongside teams providing Paediatrics, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Audiology, Physiotherapy, Dietetics, etc.  They will provide triage, assessments and time-limited evidence-based interventions, including CBT. Innovative service developments are encouraged and there is opportunity for facilitating groups for young people and for parents, and for offering consultation and training to professional colleagues working with the client group in partner agencies, in particular schools.

The Generic team provides assessment and treatment to children and young people with a wide range of mental health problems (from mild to severe). Using a multi-disciplinary approach for children, young people, their families and carers. The clinical work is short and longer term provided on an outreach basis, close to home in non-stigmatizing settings where appropriate. Input is provided where there is signs and symptoms of a major psychiatric disorder; active suicidal or self-harming ideas, attempted or actual self-harm, somatic disorders or psychosomatic difficulties and extreme trauma

The service provides evidence-based interventions informed by national and local policy via multi-disciplinary teams and treatment pathways, and is aligned to the core principles of the Children & Young People’s IAPT framework (CYP-IAPT). The service has close links to local partner agencies including community children’s services, acute paediatrics, social services and education. 

Bexley CAMHS has played a leading part in the development of children’s service and is represented on many of the major planning groups for children’s services within the borough.  We are finalising the process of strategic change in associated with partner agencies, alongside CAMHS teams in Bromley and Greenwich, which are also managed by Oxleas.  All 3 boroughs received additional transformation funding as part of The Future in Mind Government Taskforce plans.

The Bexley CAMH Services are based at Children and Young People Service, Park Crescent, Erith, Kent DA8 3EE and Queen Mary’s Hospital, Frognal Avenue, Sidcup, Kent DA14 6LT.  Both of these sites are integrated Children and Young People Hubs within the London Borough of Bexley.

Bexley CAMHS is a friendly, busy and thriving CYP IAPT service, regarded as an accessible and effective service.  Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, learning disabilities and community services to the London Boroughs of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich. The Trust and CAMHS have recently been rated as Good by the CQC and has a culture of supporting staff, whilst providing excellent services within a robust clinical governance framework.  The post holder is ultimately responsible to the Chief Executive of the Trust, professional accountability is to the Medical Director, Dr Ify Okocha and leave/appraisal and job planning would be with the Clinical Director. The psychiatry profession is well regarded within the Trust as a whole. There are excellent CPD opportunities within the three monthly MAC meeting and monthly CAMHS psychiatry meetings and SPA time is available within the timetable.
